What if it rains?

What makes our little corner of BC so lush is also the same thing that makes it sometimes hard to live in Vancouver during the winter.

Rain.

And when you’ve booked a family photoshoot anywhere from a few weeks to a few months in advance, it can be hard to predict what the weather will do on the actual day.

So on the off chance, Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and decides to rain on the day of your family photos, fear not, we have a few ways to tackle it!

Reschedule Your Shoot

The obvious solution is to reschedule to another date. Same place, same time, just maybe the next day or the following week. Sometimes, Mother Nature doesn’t want to rain the whole day so you could potentially shoot in the morning vs afternoon/evening or vice versa

But what happens when you can’t reschedule to a different time or a different date?

Let’s roll with it!

Lean Into It

As with most born and raised Vancouverites, you are used to the rain. You have to be. So let’s embrace what makes everything around us so lush and go out and enjoy the weather anyway!

GUMBOOTS + RAINCOAST + UMBRELLAS

This is when the muddy buddies, gumboots and clear umbrellas come in handy. They give you freedom to move around, we can make sure the background is actually what you want and the props help entertain kids while letting them be themselves.

PRO TIP: Bring towels, extra clothes and warm layers/blankets so that everyone can dry off and be comfortable for the ride home.

COVERED AREAS

If you’re not super fussed about what the background is for your family photos or would rather not stand in the rain, another option is a covered area. Under bridges and buildings with big overhangs are great for this, however we’d be limited in our space.

Benefits Of Rainy Photoshoots

Rainy photoshoots often get a bad wrap, but they have their own magic and allure.

MAKES IT MEMORABLE

Aside from the fact that the weather will likely be a standout memory, this is also a great opportunity to make it extra memorable for the fam. Let your kids run a little wilder, get a little dirtier and jump in a few more puddles than usual.

By making it a special occasion, you also help shift any grumpiness about being out in the rain into something fun and special!

LESS PEOPLE AT POPULAR LOCATIONS

When the weather is meh, it tends to keep the crowds away which means we won’t have to hunt for an un-crowded spot or worry about too many distractions in the background. This gives your kids the freedom to run around and play in the space.

SOFT LIGHT

Overcast days are actually really great for photos. The light is softened by the clouds which means no squinty photos or harsh shadows. This type of light makes everyone look good.

FUN SURPRISES

Mother Nature sometimes makes up for a little bit of rain with pretty rainbows.
