5 Things to Consider When Choosing an Elopement Photographer

Choosing an elopement photographer can be so challenging. I mean, this is an industry flooded with options. Narrowing down your choices can feel impossible! To help give you some clarity, here are 5 things that I’ve learned are 5 things that are super important to consider when choosing your elopement photographer.

1. The type of elopement photographer

What kind of elopement do you want to have? Is it a civil ceremony at the beach with your 2 besties + an officiant? Are you looking to go on a hike to a beautiful view, say your vows, and pop champagne as the sun sets? Do you want to hit the urban jungle for a little culture?

The right elopement photographer will get you, your plans, and your vision. They’ll jump in with ideas and be full of “yes! and..” energy. They’ll also have the capacity to do what you’re wanting to do (hiking with all your gear takes some planning and the right carry-cases-- that kind of thing).

For me, as a PNW photographer living in beautiful Vancouver, forest, hiking, and beach elopements are my jam!

2. Your planning style & needs

Are you a researcher and planner at heart, or are you looking for someone who can help or do the bulk of the planning for you by scouting location options, planning the day's logistics, etc.? Knowing what you want will help you zero in on the perfect elopement photographer for you.

I wouldn’t quite consider myself a Type A person-- but I’m definitely a B+. I’ve spent over a decade as a project manager, so I love me a good timeline and colour coded spreadsheet! I’m super organized with backup plans for my backup plans, but also totally cool to just go with what FEELS right in the moment.

3. Location (or destination)

Is your elopement going to be local, or are you having a destination elopement? Will you be hiring someone local, or do you have a photographer you love that you’d like to bring with you?

The benefits of a local photographer

They’re familiar with the area, they can scout locations in advance, and they’re probably pretty familiar with the local elopement scene.

The benefits of a seasoned destination photographer

If you're opting for more of an adventure elopement, hiring a photographer who knows how to adapt to ever-changing weather conditions and has first aid training might bring an added sense of calm to your day. You’ll be able to relax knowing you're in good hands!

4. Travel fees

Are the travel fees and photographer accommodations included in your elopement package, or do they cost extra?

Most full-day elopements require at least a 1-night stay, but if you're traveling across many time zones, you may need to consider a longer stay to give everyone a chance to adjust.

Tip: Always ask who is responsible for booking the photographers travel. I always make my own travel arrangements because:

  1. You have enough on your plate; and

  2. My fees already include travel and accommodations.

5. The amount of coverage you’ll need

You deserve to have your entire day committed to memory, forever, in the form of beautiful photos that tell your story. I mean, it's the first day of your lives together as a married couple! It is just as deserving as a big, elaborate party with 150 guests.

I only offer full-day elopement packages because I feel so strongly about this. Click here to read more about what that looks like.
